That low-growing plant with the purple-tinged leaves and tiny flowers taking over your lawn right now? That is Lamium purpureum, purple dead nettle. And before you pull it, read this.
It is one of the first plants to emerge in early spring, often carpeting entire patches of yard or garden bed in soft waves of green and purple. Up close, the leaves are fuzzy and heart-shaped, blushing deep violet at the top where they catch the light, with delicate tubular purple flowers tucked in at each node.

FIRST, LET'S TALK IDENTIFICATION
Purple dead nettle is commonly confused with its close relative, henbit (Lamium amplexicaule). They grow in the same places, bloom at the same time, and both belong to the mint family. Here is how to tell them apart.
Purple dead nettle has leaves that are stalked, meaning each leaf has its own small stem attaching it to the main stalk. The upper leaves turn distinctly purple or reddish, especially in full sun. The leaves are triangular to heart-shaped with a wrinkled, fuzzy texture.
Henbit, by contrast, has leaves that clasp directly around the stem with no separate stalk, giving it a more wrapped appearance. The flowers are similar but the overall structure is slightly different.
Both are edible and medicinal. Know what you have. And know that neither is related to stinging nettle; neither will sting you. That is precisely where the name "dead" nettle comes from.
WHAT IT CONTAINS
Purple dead nettle is mineral-rich and genuinely nutritive. It carries iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and K, putting it in the same category as other dense spring greens. Herbalists also value it for its flavonoid content, particularly quercetin and rosmarinic acid. These are the compounds most associated with its reputation for supporting the body during allergy season, and with its broader anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial actions.
Traditionally, the plant has also been used as a styptic, meaning the fresh leaves applied directly to a minor cut can help slow bleeding. This is the same kind of first-aid, field-use tradition seen with plantain and yarrow. The astringent compounds responsible for that action are also present in a water-based infusion, which is part of what makes tea useful even if it is not the ideal preparation for every purpose.
SOLUBILITY AND HOW IT CHANGES THE WAY WE WORK WITH IT
This is where a lot of people miss the mark with purple dead nettle, and it is worth slowing down here.
Different compounds in a plant dissolve into different solvents. Water pulls water-soluble compounds: minerals, some flavonoids, mucilaginous compounds, and astringent tannins. Alcohol pulls a wider range, including resinous and alcohol-soluble compounds that water cannot reach. Vinegar excels specifically at pulling minerals.
Tea made from purple dead nettle is genuinely useful. It is diuretic, diaphoretic, supportive for the immune system, and carries the plant's astringent and mineral compounds. It is a pleasant daily tonic and worth making regularly.
But quercetin, the compound most associated with seasonal allergy support and histamine modulation, is alcohol-soluble. Water extracts only a fraction of it. If allergy relief is the goal, a tincture is the right preparation, not an infusion.
The same principle applies to rosmarinic acid, another key flavonoid here. To pull these compounds in meaningful concentration, you need alcohol as your solvent, and the proof you use depends on whether your plant material is fresh or dried.
MAKING A PURPLE DEAD NETTLE TINCTURE
Fresh plant material: Use 50 to 75% alcohol (100 to 151 proof). Fresh plant already contains significant moisture, so a higher proof compensates for the water content already present in the herb and ensures proper extraction and preservation. The standard formula is a 1:2 ratio, 100g of fresh herb to 200ml of 75% alcohol.
Dried plant material: Use 40 to 50% alcohol (80 to 100 proof). Because drying removes most of the plant's moisture, the water naturally present in 80 to 100 proof spirits helps rehydrate the herb and improves extraction of both water-soluble and alcohol-soluble compounds together. A reliable formula is a 1:5 ratio, 100g of dried herb to 500ml of 100 proof alcohol.
A note on going too high: very high proof alcohol such as 190 proof Everclear will pull resinous compounds, but it is not the best choice here. Quercetin and rosmarinic acid extract most effectively in a balanced water-alcohol menstruum around 40 to 60%. Going too high can over-extract bitter compounds while actually under-extracting the polyphenols that make this plant worth tincturing in the first place.
Macerate for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking the jar regularly. Strain well, bottle in amber glass, and label with the date, plant material, and menstruum used.
DRYING FOR LATER
If the plant is abundant in your yard right now, spring usually provides far more than can be used fresh. It dries easily. Spread the flowers loosely on a drying rack or screen in a warm spot with good airflow, away from direct sun. Gentle heat matters here; high temperatures will volatilize the delicate compounds you are trying to preserve. Once fully dry and crumbly, store in an airtight jar away from light. Dried well, it keeps for up to a year and is ready to use for tea or tincture long after the season has passed.
THE OXYMEL
One of the best ways to capture the rich minerals of purple dead nettle is in a spring oxymel alongside dandelion. Vinegar is the superior solvent for minerals, more effective than water or alcohol for that specific purpose.
